Importance of Legal Education in Modern India

Law, Legal education and development have become inter-related concepts in the modern world. Right knowledge and nurturing with the legal education can facilitate lawyers, who have a good social vision. Though, it sounds similar to law, legal education not just produces lawyers as it’s considered to be a legal instrument for social design.

Law helps society achieve good status as it can develop law abiding citizen, lawyers and aspiring judges. In India, Legal education is considered as the education of lawyers before they even begin their practice.

That said, legal education is not a newfound subject as it dates back to the ancient times, where the kings and princes were given teaching about Dharma and Nyaya. It was the Mughal Empire that saw the emergence of legal representatives. The concept of legal education was in use before we got our freedom as well, as most of our freedom fighters, be it Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, among others, were all from legal background. That speaks volumes about the importance of Legal education. However, its significance has multiplied only post 1947 because of a working constitution and judicial system in place.

Later, the introduction of five years law courses and establishment of National Law University at Bangalore made legal education gained more prominence. As per the experts at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, New Law College in Pune, training students for legal profession will set the right tone for future development in the country.

In a developing country like India, the objectives of legal education may be multi-fold as the understanding of issue requires more time and knowledge.

Legal education is a broad concept and requires good understanding of the court of law, law teaching, research and administration— as knowledge of different branches play a pivotal role. It facilitates a sense of equality before law.  Legal Education helps instill a sense of duty that there is no one above the law. Therefore, legal education not just produces efficient lawyers but also creates law abiding citizens.
