What is a PPF calculator?

A PPF (Public Provident Fund) calculator shows how much your PPF account will be worth at maturity, based on how much you deposit, how often, the interest rate, and how long you stay invested. PPF is a government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in, guaranteed returns, and tax-free maturity, which makes it one of the most popular long-term savings options in India.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose whether you will deposit once a year or every month.
  2. Enter your deposit amount, or tap a quick amount. PPF allows up to ₹1,50,000 a year.
  3. Keep the current interest rate, or try a different one to see how rate changes affect you.
  4. Choose the period: 15 years, or longer if you plan to extend in 5-year blocks.
  5. If you extend beyond 15 years, choose whether you will keep depositing.

How PPF interest is calculated

PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and added to your account once a year on 31 March. For a fixed yearly deposit made before 5 April, the maturity value is:

F = P × [(1 + i)n − 1] ÷ i × (1 + i)

F is the maturity value, P is your yearly deposit, i is the yearly interest rate as a decimal, and n is the number of years.

Example

Yearly deposit
₹1,50,000
Interest rate
7.1% a year
Period
15 years
Total deposited
₹22,50,000
Interest earned
₹18,18,209
Maturity value
₹40,68,209

The entire ₹40,68,209 is tax-free. Extending the same account for another 5 years with continued deposits raises the maturity value to about ₹66.6 lakh.

Tip: deposit before the 5th

Because interest is calculated on the lowest balance after the 5th of each month, money deposited on the 6th or later earns no interest for that month. Paying your yearly amount before 5 April, or your monthly amount before the 5th of each month, gets you the most interest.

Key PPF rules

  • Tenure. 15 years, which can be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits.
  • Deposit limits. At least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year.
  • Tax benefit. PPF has EEE status: deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C (old tax regime), and both interest and maturity amount are tax-free.
  • Loan. You can take a loan against your PPF balance from the 3rd to the 6th financial year.
  • Partial withdrawal. Allowed once a year from the 7th financial year, subject to limits.
  • Safety. PPF is backed by the Government of India, so your money and interest are fully secure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF rate is 7.1% a year for the October to December 2026 quarter. The government reviews the rate every quarter, so check the latest notified rate before investing.

Is PPF maturity amount fully tax-free?

Yes. PPF has EEE tax status. Deposits qualify for Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are completely tax-free.

Is it better to deposit yearly or monthly in PPF?

A single deposit before 5 April earns slightly more because the whole amount earns interest for the full year. Monthly deposits before the 5th of each month are a good choice if you prefer to invest from your monthly income.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes. You can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without making fresh deposits, by submitting the extension form within one year of maturity.

Can I withdraw money from PPF before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are allowed once a year from the 7th financial year. Premature closure is allowed after 5 years only for specific reasons, such as serious illness or higher education, and comes with a small interest penalty.

What happens if I miss a yearly PPF deposit?

If you deposit less than ₹500 in a financial year, the account becomes inactive. You can revive it by paying the missed minimum deposits along with a small penalty for each year missed.
